The Body’s Innate Intelligence: Homeopathy, Vital Force & Touch for Health

The body has an innate intelligence. Learn how it connects with the vital force in homeopathy and gentle muscle testing used in Touch for Health.
BLOG-Innate Intelligence, Homeopathy and Touch for Health

HomeopathyThere is something remarkable about the human body.

From the moment we are born, our bodies are constantly working to keep us alive. Our hearts beat without conscious instruction. We breathe without thinking about every breath. Our temperature adjusts, wounds begin to repair, our digestive system responds to food, and our nervous system continually takes in information and adapts.

An intelligence lives within the body.

I call it the body’s innate intelligence.

Without this intelligence, we would not be alive. It allows the body to function, adapt, respond, and maintain the incredible processes that make life possible. It is part of what animates us and makes us living beings rather than simply a collection of physical parts.

As a homeopath, this idea is especially meaningful to me because homeopathy has long described this life-regulating principle as the vital force.

Different traditions may use different words to describe it, but the underlying idea is fascinating:

Something within us gives life to the body and coordinates the living organism.

Quick Summary

What Is the Body’s Innate Intelligence?

When I talk about innate intelligence, I am not talking about intelligence in the way we think of the brain solving a mathematical problem. I mean the body’s remarkable ability to sense, communicate, regulate, and adapt.

Think about what happens when you cut your finger. You don’t have to consciously tell your body to begin the healing process. Your body responds. Blood flow changes. Immune activity responds. Cells communicate. Tissue begins repairing itself.

Or think about what happens when you become too hot. Your body recognizes the change and responds by adjusting circulation and producing sweat to help regulate your temperature.

These processes happen because the living body is constantly communicating and responding to its environment.

That is body intelligence, and it is happening every moment of every day.

If We Can’t See It, Does That Mean It Isn’t There?

This is where the concept of energy becomes interesting. We cannot see everything that is real.

We cannot see gravity, yet we experience its effects. We cannot see radio waves, yet our phones and radios depend on them. We cannot see the electrical activity moving through the nervous system with our eyes, yet it is fundamental to how the body functions.

The living body is an extraordinarily complex system of electrical, chemical, and mechanical communication. Nature itself is full of energy and movement, from the electrical activity of a cell to the energy involved in every living system.

This is why I believe it is important not to dismiss something simply because we cannot see it with our eyes. We can understand some things by observing their effects.

The Vital Force in Homeopathy

This is one reason I was drawn to homeopathy. In homeopathic philosophy, the vital force is described as the dynamic, life-regulating principle within the living organism.

As a homeopath, I don’t simply look at a diagnosis or a list of symptoms. I look at the person.

I want to understand the individual’s physical symptoms, emotional patterns, history, sensitivities, stresses, and the changes that have occurred over time. Two people can experience the same symptom but have very different underlying patterns. That individual pattern matters.

Rather than only asking, “What symptom do you have?” we can also ask:

This is why taking a full homeopathic case is so important to me.

Where Does Energy Healing Fit In?

Energy-based approaches can be difficult to explain because you can’t always see the process happening. But just because something isn’t visible doesn’t automatically make it unimportant.

Our bodies are living, communicating systems. The nervous system uses electrical impulses. Cells maintain electrical gradients. The heart and brain both generate measurable electrical activity.

This is why I use the term bioenergetic rather than approaching this work as something mystical or spiritual. For me, it means recognizing that there are many interacting layers to the living body: physical, neurological, emotional, and energetic.

How Touch for Health Connects to Body Intelligence

This understanding of the body’s innate intelligence is also what drew me to Touch for Health.

Touch for Health uses gentle muscle testing as a form of biofeedback. During a session, we don’t try to force the body into a particular position or manipulate it into doing something. Instead, we observe the body’s responses. The muscle response becomes another way of communicating with the body.

A session begins with a conversation about what you are experiencing and what you would like to explore. We then use muscle testing and Touch for Health techniques to assess responses and identify areas where balancing techniques may be appropriate.

Depending on the session, we may explore physical, emotional, or stress-related patterns. The techniques are gentle and are not designed to diagnose disease. We then retest the muscle response to observe how the body has responded.

It becomes a conversation between you, the practitioner, and your body’s responses.

What Is Touch for Health? 10 Questions People Ask Before Their First Session

Wondering what Touch for Health is or what happens during a session? Here are answers to 10 common questions, including muscle monitoring, goals, benefits, and what to expect.

You Don’t Have to Understand It for Your Body to Respond

You don’t have to understand how your body heals a cut for healing to begin. You don’t have to understand how your heart maintains its rhythm for it to beat. And you don’t have to consciously understand every process happening inside you for your body to respond to its environment.

The body’s intelligence exists whether or not we consciously understand it. Sometimes, our role is to create the right conditions to listen.

That is one of the things I love about Touch for Health. Rather than assuming I already know what your body needs, I can use muscle testing to help guide the session.

Your Body Is Not Broken

This is an important part of my approach. When someone isn’t feeling well, I don’t automatically think of their body as broken. I think about a body that may be adapting.

Symptoms can signal that something has changed or that the body is responding to internal or external stress. That doesn’t mean you should ignore symptoms. Medical assessment is extremely important when appropriate.

Alongside that, I believe it is valuable to become curious about the person as a whole:

Working With the Body, Not Against It

This is the common thread that connects my work. Whether I am working with someone through homeopathy, Touch for Health, Spinal Flow, or other bioenergetic approaches, I come back to the same principle:

The body is intelligent. It is constantly communicating, adapting, and working to maintain life.

My role is not to take over that intelligence. My role is to listen, observe, facilitate, and support.

The body is not simply something we work on. It is something we work with.

And sometimes, when we slow down enough to listen, the body has a lot to tell us.

A Touch for Health session offers a gentle way to listen to your body’s responses through muscle testing and explore the patterns that may be asking for attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you mean by “innate intelligence”?
Innate intelligence is the body’s natural ability to regulate, communicate, adapt, and carry out the countless processes required to maintain life. It is the remarkable organizing capacity of the living body.

What is the vital force in homeopathy?
In homeopathic philosophy, the vital force refers to the dynamic principle that maintains the living organism. It is one of the foundational concepts of homeopathy and is part of why homeopaths look at the person as a whole rather than simply matching a remedy to a diagnosis.

Is the vital force the same thing as energy?
Not necessarily. The terms can overlap in everyday conversation, but they come from different conceptual frameworks. I use “vital force” specifically in the context of homeopathy, while “bioenergetic” describes approaches that consider the living body’s energetic and regulatory aspects.

What is energy healing?
Energy healing is a broad term for approaches based on the idea that energetic patterns are connected with wellbeing. Different systems have different explanations and techniques. In my practice, I use the term bioenergetic because I prefer to focus on the living body’s communication, regulation, and responses rather than a spiritual interpretation.

If I can’t see energy, how can it matter?
Many processes that affect us cannot be seen directly, although we can observe their effects. The human body itself depends on measurable electrical and chemical activity. Bioenergetic approaches extend the conversation into areas that are not always directly visible or measurable in the same way as conventional clinical tests.

What happens during a Touch for Health session?
We begin with a conversation about what you are experiencing and what you would like to work on. We then use gentle muscle testing as biofeedback. Based on the responses, we may use appropriate Touch for Health balancing techniques and then retest to observe changes in the muscle response.

Does Touch for Health diagnose illness?
No. Touch for Health muscle testing is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or medical testing. It is a complementary approach used to explore the body’s responses and guide balancing techniques.

Is Touch for Health painful?
Touch for Health techniques are generally gentle. The intention is not to force or manipulate the body, but to use gentle contact, muscle testing, and balancing techniques.

Do I have to believe in energy for Touch for Health to work?
You don’t need to adopt a particular belief system to have a session. You can be curious and observe your own experience. My approach is practical and focused on the body’s responses, not on requiring a spiritual belief.

How does Touch for Health fit with homeopathy?
They are different approaches, but they share something important in my practice: looking at the individual rather than only the symptom. Homeopathy involves a detailed case-taking process to understand an individual’s physical and emotional patterns, while Touch for Health uses muscle testing and balancing techniques to explore the body’s responses.

Why do you believe the body should be listened to?
Because the body is communicating all the time. Symptoms, patterns, changes, and responses can provide information. Learning to pay attention to those signals can help us become more aware of what our bodies may need.

The Beginning of a Different Conversation

Perhaps the most important question isn’t always, “What is wrong with me?”

Perhaps sometimes we can also ask, “What is my body trying to tell me?”

That question opens the door to curiosity. It invites us to listen rather than fight against the body. And it reminds us that underneath the symptoms, stresses, and challenges of everyday life is something extraordinary: a living body with an innate intelligence that is working, every moment, to keep us alive.
